When he's dying, these are the things he knows:
That her kimono was white the first time they met, and her skin was whiter still. It was December, and they were both waiting for the snow to fall. She sat beside him on the porch while their fathers talked politics, and when she asked him, not quite meeting his eyes, with her hands resting in the folds at her lap, if the curse seal on his forehead hurt, he had lied. That she has never been good for anything, always a little too slow and a little too clumsy. The byakugan has always been more of a handicap than a gift for her; she does better when she just looks straight ahead, rather than behind and in front and to either side. That she should've given up when he told her to. He's never regretted nearly killing her, just like he's never actually apologised for calling her a failure. Unlike Naruto, she isn't the type to demand he make amends, so he hasn't, and maybe their just as badly off as they were to begin with, but he sort of doubts it. That her father is an asshole even if he isn't a murderer. Because even if Hiashi-sama can't seem to see it, she tries, and because she will lead and keep peace far better than Hanabi could when she finally gets her chance. He knows this, and in a way, he can't wait to be proved right. That red is her best colour, and blue is a close second. When he's healing, these are the things he knows: That she's wearing red when she comes to visit him in the hospital. She still can't bring herself to meet his eyes, but she sits next to his bed and tells him about what's happened in the village while he's been locked up in here. He bites out something about how it's like Naruto to brag about something and then fail, and she replies that at least Naruto doesn't have a stupid haircut. He nearly laughs. That she's probably the best person he's ever known. Somehow in a clan divided down the middle, she's managed to grow up balanced, normal, caring, and as a family, they've done nothing to deserve her. That maybe he should say he's sorry. Because, when you get right down to it, he doesn't regret almost killing her, but he doesn't regret letting her live either. So, he thinks someday he'll apologize, but for now, it's apology enough to sit on the dojo floor and run her through her patterns while his wounds are still closing up. That Hiashi-sama is probably everything he ever hated about the head family, and one day, she'll change all that. That, in a way he can't quite define, she's come to be his point. Naruto talks about courage being the willingness to die for an important person, but he's starting to think that maybe there's a lot more courage to be found in living for her sake. That her footwork still needs practice. |
